My name is Caleb George Hubbard. I am currently an Assistant Professor of Communication Studies in the Department of Communication Studies at Sam Houston State University. I earned my Ph.D. at University of Oklahoma.
My research focuses around popular culture, fan relationships, and political communication. I specifically have studies that focus around the concept of fandom, which studies how fans interact with the fan object (i.e., the movie or the celebrity), as well as fans' interaction with other fans. My research pipeline is well underway. I have multiple projects ongonig from brainstorming to data collection to data analysis to final edits. Currently, I have projects submitted to journals, many of them within the revise and resubmit stage. My research is submited within reginal journals, like Atlantic Journal of Communication, to international journals, like Journal of Communicaiton, as well as niche journals, like Celebrity Studies.
I am also experienced being in the classroom. Within my Masters degree, I was a graduate assistant. Soon after my Masters, I taught as an adjunct instructor, as well as in middle school and high school. Once I moved to earn my PhD, I gained more experience in the classroom. I have taught classes both in person and fully online, from a class of five to a class of 75 students. Currently, I am teaching courses both online and in person, from undergraduate to master's level courses. My favorite courses to teach are ones that I get to engage in why communication research is so fun, such as fan communication, humor communication, and research methods.
In addition to research and classroom, I have a long list of service items, from within my department, other organizations, and outside of the university realm. In 2022 I was awarded the first-ever "Citizenship Award" in the Department of Communication at OU for my service in the department. A few years before that, I was awarded the "Outstanding Graduate Student" award at the University of Oklahoma that recognized my teaching, research, and service.
